Volunteering opportunities for Commonwealth Games 2010

Here is the list of volunteer positions open for Commonwealth Games 2010. Most of the positions will be filled by volunteers from various universities in Delhi and other parts of the countries.

Volunteers from other states and countries, and volunteers of all age are welcome to join the program. (Click here to read more about Commonwealth Games volunteer program.)

Accreditation

Each visiting athlete, official and member of the Games workforce will be issued with an accreditation pass, identifying that person and his/her area access entitlements. Volunteers engaged in this area will create and issue accreditation passes and provide assistance with accreditation issues.

Accommodation Volunteers

The Accommodation team will support accommodation supervisors in catering to any requests guests have at respective locations, and ensure the smooth functioning of all operational tasks that are delegated by the accommodation supervisors.

Volunteers for Ceremonies

The ceremonies team will require people to fill a range of support activities for the opening and closing ceremonies such as marshalling, operations assistance and technical support.

CGA Relations volunteers

Liaison Officers are responsible for ensuring that respective Commonwealth Games 2010 Association(CGA) contingents/Commonwealth Games Federation(CGF)executive members/ VIP’s/dignitaries receive all requisite support for any issue/ assistance as requested.

Games Village volunteers

Commonwealth Games Village volunteers provide assistance to Games Village residents as well as to government officials and special guests.This may include administrative assistance, airport meet-and-greet services, and venue based assistance. Experience or skill in protocol or diplomacy is essential to these roles.

Communications (Technical)

Communications volunteers assist with Commonwealth Games 2010 venue operations, reporting and monitoring incidents in competition and non-competition venues. Other responsibilities include registering issues and the distribution/collection of communications equipment. Some communications roles may require prior experience in working with radio systems and communications protocol.

Logistics Volunteers

Volunteers for logistic area will work in Logistics stores and will, move and provide the furniture, fixtures, equipments and supplies to the Games event programme areas and venues. Roles within logistics will largely involve coordination of activities.

Volunteers for Press Operations

Press Operations volunteers for 2010 Commonwealth Games provide services to the accredited press at the Main Press Centre and all competition venues. This support includes roles such as information assistants, help desk and photo journalist assistants.

Protocol

The Protocol team for CWG will ensure that all athletes and officials are given appropriate services in accordance to their title from different functions such as hospitality and transportation and assist the officials and athletes arriving at the airports. Responsible for the smooth execution of all operational tasks that are delegated and reporting protocol relating issues as observed to the Protocol Coordinator.

Spectator Services
Spectator Services volunteers will provide meet-and-greet services for spectators and the general public within the venues and in public areas. They will also provide Games specific directional assistance, information and general assistance, where required. These roles will involve contact with large numbers of spectators. A positive, spector focused attitude is essential for these roles. It requires a friendly but strong personality to interpret spectator needs and provide directions.

Sponsorship
Management of key sponsor relationships with the CW Games is the responsibility of the Sponsorship team. Hosting assistant roles will be required at some sporting venues and within the Sponsor Hospitality Village. This role will require strong customer service, attention to detail, a willingness to help and a positive attitude.

Technology volunteers
There are many opportunities for volunteers to fill technological roles, including help desk, customer support, computer and printer operators, time scoring and results, network systems and data entry etc. Related skills and experience are essential to be selected in this category.

Transport volunteers
Transport volunteers are required at all major CW Games venues and other key transport locations to assist with vehicle pool operations, load zone assistance and passenger service. A good customer service attitude is essential for registering as transport volunteer.

Workforce Operations
A Workforce Operations team will operate at all venues to provide assistance and support to the Games workforce and to managers of the workforce. Duties include assisting with workforce check-in, dealing with personnel related issues and schedule management. Experience in people management or human resources will be an advantage.

CWG Cycling event to be rescheduled..!!

Delhi government has informed Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee last week to reschedule (click here to see Commonwealth Games schedule) the CWG Cycling Mass Start competition, citing traffic constraints.

Officials of the CWG 2010 organising committee (OC) said they were trying hard to find alternatives to ensure the competition is held smoothly.

The road race, in which hundreds of participants are expected, is to be held on October 10 when public roads in the New Delhi area will become a race track.

The Delhi traffic police said a portion of the proposed route encircles the Talkatora Stadium complex where a diving competition is to be held on the same day, which could lead to traffic chaos.

OC secretary Lalit Bhanot said, "We are aware of the problem and are trying to find an alternative within a fortnight." But such confusion-barely eight months ahead of the CWG- has clearly upset the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF

CGF chief executive officer Mike Hooper said the sudden development is worrying as it is now too late to reschedule the competition. "The CGF hasn't been informed of the problem yet but I have asked the officials concerned to brief me about it immediately," said Hooper

Chief secretary Rakesh Mehta last week wrote to the OC asking it to either reschedule the competition to some other day or hold it in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, where another cycling competition is to be held

Bhanot mentioned that last minute confusion on the traffic police, who raised the objection late. "We were told only recently that one of the roads near the Talkatora stadium where the cycle race is to be held is narrow and it can't handle spectators and race competitors simultaneously," said Bhanot

The day-long event includes a 165-kilometre race for men and a 100-kilometre race for women. Participants from 71 countries are scheduled to take part, with each country allowed to field 27 athletes in the event

The traffic police's special commissioner, Ajay Chadha, said, "The competition's route would overlap with the scheduled route of the Games officials at two points on Park Street and Kautilya Marg. It would be impossible to reserve the dedicated lanes for officials if the Cycling Mass is also held on the same day."

Delhi Metro airport link may get delayed

The Airport Express project being jointly developed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Reliance Infra, it seems, is running behind schedule and may not finish in time for Commonwealth Games 2010

The special metro train that promises to zip you from the heart of Delhi to the airport in just 22 minutes, a journey that normally takes more than an hour is expected to miss the Commonwealth Games 2010 deadlines.

Players and visitors coming for this year's Commonwealth Games in October may miss the ride on this metro as DMRC may miss its completion deadline of September 2010. The Metro is being constructed under a unique model

The DMRC will first complete all the civil works including stations, tunnel and viaduct and then hand it over to Reliance Infra, who will run it for a period of 30 years.

Reliance Infra is also responsible for laying tracks and operational equipment and completing the station, which will be modeled on airport terminals

But the big worry for the government is that DMRC has not handed over the civil structure to Reliance Infra yet for fitting out. Even stations haven’t been given out yet for fitment and it’s this 3 to 4 month delay, which can cost the project dearly.

There has been a flurry of communication between Reliance Infra and DMRC, where the company has raised apprehension that at the current pace of work it may not be able to make the system operational before the Commonwealth Games.

Delhi Commonwealth Basketball championship cancelled

This year's Commonwealth Basketball Championships, due to be staged in New Delhi in August, have been cancelled by the world governing body, FIBA.

The decision comes just two weeks after FIBA had written to Keith Mair, chief executive of England Basketball, to confirm that a men's tournament would be staged in the Indian capital.

The tournament was not directly connected with the Commonwealth Games, which are being held in India for the first time in October.

Although the scrapping of the tournament represents a set-back to the Indian organisers and those players hoping to compete, FIBA stressed that the cancellation had nothing to do with concerns about facilities, organisation or security - three issues which have blighted the build-up to the Delhi Games.

Basketball has only been included in the Commonwealth Games once, in Melbourne four years ago where teams from eight countries, including England and Scotland, competed in men's and women's tournaments.

Both Gold medals were won by Australia, with England's men and women taking the bronze medals.

Although Australia are understood to have requested delaying the Commonwealth tournament until 2011, FIBA blamed a crowded international programme for its decision.

"The major national federations of the Commonwealth have experienced difficulty with the scheduling of the national team programmes as Australia, Canada and New Zealand have all qualified for the FIBA world championship in Turkey while England - as part of Great Britain - will compete in the European championships qualification series," said a spokesman.

But Mair expressed his disappointment at the scrapping of the tournament, which England Basketball had wanted to use for players not included in the Great Britain squad.

There are no plans for the sport to be contested at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
