Glasgow Commonwealth Games logo unveiled

The new logo for the 2014 Commonwealth Games which will take place in Glasgow, was revealed yesterday. The logo was designed by Glasgow-based design agency Marque and according to reports, is said to have cost £95,000. The design is based around numbers associated with the games. This is the 20th time the games have been held, there are 17 sports represented, and it takes place over 11 days of competition and 1 host city.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has also approved, for the first time, the use of an alternative Gaelic form of the design. The Gaelic version contains the type “Glaschu 2014”, followed by "20mh Geamaichean a’Cho Fhlaitheis" (20th Commonwealth Games).

CWG pictograms inspired by Indian folk art

Bangalore-based design agency, Idiom, has created the logo, pictograms and mascot for this year's 19th Commonwealth Games which will take place in Delhi. The pictograms are, explains principal designer on the project Sonia Manchada, a blend of the pictograms designed by Otl Aicher for the 1972 Munich Olympic games – and Sanjhi, a form of Indian folk art.

Sanjhi is a traditional form of artwork created by paper-cutting stencils which are (and have been for centuries) used to decorate palaces and temples for celebrations. "The word Sanjhi is derived from 'sanjaa', meaning 'dressing up/beautifying'

"The pictograms will dress up Delhi and get the capital ready for the Commonwealth Games."

Unlike the complicated tendering processes in place which encourages a multitude of design agencies to apply to design various aspects of the communication collateral for London's forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games - Idiom has been assigned with creating the entire "look and feel" of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Commonwealth games 2010 logo created by the company is inspired by the spoked wheel or 'chakra' that sits in the centre of the Indian national flag. "The chakra has been freed up, energised," explains Manchada of the approach to the logo's design. "The collective energy of our people will ensure that we don't just keep plodding along, but that we rise up!"

Prince Edward visits Commonwealth Games venues

Earl of Wessex Prince Edward visited the Commonwealth Games venues and the Games Village here on Sunday. He inspected the sites carefully and at the end expressed satisfaction at the infrastructure being developed for the coming international sporting event.

Dressed in a blue t-shirt with the Commonwealth Games Federation logo, Prince Edward showed keen interest in the infrastructure development in Delhi and the level of preparedness of the Organising Committee. He was particularly keen on knowing details about the Queen’s Baton Relay that will be launched by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on October 29.

Prince Edward visited the headquarters of the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games 2010. Later he also inspected Thyagaraj Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and the Games Village.

At the Games Village, the prince was shown a miniature model of the 34-tower facility. He also saw a model of the apartments before visiting tower no. 9 of the Games Village in a golf cart. He then took a round of two fully-furnished apartments and spent about 10 minutes inside the apartments looking at the facilities for athletes and left after signing the guest book.

At the Thyagaraj Stadium, the prince asked specifically about an entrance that has been created for vehicles to enter the field of play area and was happy that it was designed to allow ambulances to have easy access to injured athletes. He spent a long time at the National Stadium, where the hockey competition will be held.

Commonwealth Games Logo

2010 Commonwealth Games Logo. Come out and play
Logo of 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in Oct 2010 in Delhi is inspired by Ashok Chakra, India's national symbol of freedom, unity and power. The Chakra spiralling upwards apparently depicts the growth of India into a proud, vibrant nation.

As the Chakra emerges, you can also see the the elements in the Charkra turn into people, which represent everyone involved in the games from the athletes, organizers and the host nation. The games also are going to promote a "Green" theme which may be why the Chakra ends in green.

The tagline of the logo is “Come Out and Play”. The tag line depicts zeal and zest, and vitality in the lives of people, encouraging them to join the excitement of fun and activities. The CWG logo strives to express the core values of the Commonwealth itself, which seeks to unify humanity, promote equality and give all athletes a chance to realise their destiny at the Commonwealth Games.
