Trained personnel for Disaster management

A squad of 150 specially trained personnel will be deployed by the National Disaster Management Authority to keep vigil at all Commonwealth Games venues during the mega event to preempt any disaster or emergency situations.

The personnel have been trained by NDMA, India's highest authority on disaster management, as part of its disaster mitigation plan at the venues. "A squad of 150 personnel will man the Commonwealth Games venues. We are training them to deal with any sort of emergency situation,'' said vice chairman of NDMA, General (retd) N C Vij. He said the NDMA has tied up with the police and the Army to put in place an efficient disaster management mechanism during the sporting extravaganza, the biggest to be held in India after the Asian Games in 1982.

Without elaborating on details of the disaster management plan, Vij said the Army will also be providing some sort of "back up'' under the mechanism. He said 220 doctors have also been trained by the NDMA as part of its preparation for the Games. The NDMA has been organising mock drills in the capital to check preparedness of various agencies to deal with any sort of possible emergency situations.

CWG Disaster Management Planning

A round the-clock disaster management control room has been set up by the government to make the pleasant Commonwealth Games 2010 without the occurrence of any incident in the East District.

The control room will work in 3 shifts of 8 hours each. In each shift 2 civil defence volunteer will work on rotating basis. Games Village website also has an up control room. Through it direct networking will be possible with other control rooms for quick action during any contingency. According to the DDMA (Delhi Disaster Management Authority) officers, it deals with odd conditions in the city like bomb-blasts, earthquakes, floods, road accidents, fires and building collapses.

The Project Officer, Santosh Gupta, told that about eleven associates of the disaster team are nodal officers of different departments.

Volunteers will have the responsibility to give response of calls, as they will work as IMT (Incident Management Team). They will also work for the SRT (Special Response Team) which is divisional stage team.

Delhi working to establish emergency care for CWG

Delhi Government is in the process of identifying doctors including sports physicians, physiotherapists and masseurs from various governmental and non -governmental organizations.

Health Department, Government of Delhi has been identified as the nodal agency. A sub Committee on Health has been set up by the Organizing Committee (OC) of Commonwealth Games with Health Minister of GNCT of Delhi as the Chairperson. A Polyclinic would be established at the Games Village. At each of the stadia Medical Centre with emergency care facilities to provide on the spot medical care to the athletes, officials and others shall be established.

First aid posts shall also be established at the competition venues to provide on the spot care to the spectators. Appropriate ambulance coverage shall be provided to these venues. 150 Ambulances are being arranged for the city.

The primary and supplementary response hospitals have been identified for each of the venue to take care of any eventuality. They are being upgraded.

These are in addition to 3 intensive care and trauma treatment hospitals namely GBP Hospital, AIIMS and RML Hospital.

A State of art Sports Injury Centre is being established at Safdarjung hospital which is likely to be operational by May 2010.

Hospital disaster management plans are already functional in the hospitals in accordance to the State Disaster Management Plans to take on any eventuality.

Municipality Corporation of Delhi is the nodal agency for issues related to Public Health with support from National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health & FW, Government of India.
