Commonwealth Games village to get its Metro today

Delhi Metro is all set to cross the boundaries of the national capital today and enter the adjoining Noida area of Uttar Pradesh. The ceremonial launch of the much awaited Noida corridor connecting Delhi with the National Capital Region will take place on Thursday.

The DMRC aims to add nearly 53,000 new passengers daily on this new route, which will be open for public use starting Nov 13. This line is extremely important from 2010 Commonwealth Games perspective as it crosses through Commonwealth Games village. Commissioning of the line is another feather in the cap of Delhi government and 2010 Commonwealth Games organizing committee as it shows the focus and commitment to prepare the infrastructure on time.

This is the first time a Metro train will formally cross the Delhi border and enter Noida, both CMs of Delhi and UP will be competing for honours as both have separate functions for the inauguration of the Noida line. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will flag off the first train from the station, while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati will launch the first train from Noida.

Earlier, Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy on Wednesday said that the Delhi Metro is the proudest achievement of modern India.

He further mentioned that the ministry has taken some important decisions relating to urban transport to help the daily commuters and ease traffic congestion.

Reddy was addressing the members of the consultative committee attached to the ministry of Urban Development, here on Wednesday to deliberate on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
