A multipurpose aerostat to be used for the next month's Commonwealth Games' opening ceremony was unveiled at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium where the quadrennial sporting extravaganza will commence on October 3.
The 12m high aerostat, worth Rs 40 crore, was raised to a level of 10m above the base at a function on Wednesday and will be raised to its maximum height of 30m in the next two days.
CWG organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the aerostat is "no ordinary balloon but a piece of technology and art."
The unveiling took place amid heavy downpours but after the ceremony Kalmadi said that the aerostat would stand still "even during rains and it stands tall without any problem at all."
The aerostat will be multi-purpose, with video content being projected on it, including animation and graphics and will also be synchronised with the events that will be taking place during the opening ceremony.
The projection will be of high-resolution and some of the live events during the Games will also be projected on the aerostat. The aerostat will lift scenic elements and create dramatic effects, a release said.
Viraf Sarkari, Director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, described the aerostat as technological marvel and said, "The USP of this aerostat is that it is used for projection in 360 degrees so every person in the stadium can view the entire effect of the aerostat."
There will be light fixtures with mirrors which will be fixed on the belly of the balloon and this will emit a warm glow.
Speaking on the occasion, C K Valson, Competition Manager for Athletics, said the track at the stadium has received a Class 1 certification, making it the first one in India to get it.
Valson also assured the ongoing rains would not affect the track as it has been covered completely and hoped that a number of new records would be made on this.
