Commonwealth Games prep delay distressing: CGF

Michael Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation has expressed disappointment over preparations for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and said that further delays in venue construction and stadium are "distressing".

Fennell mentioned that Coordination Committee report specifically talks about delay in venue preparations, and specifically the delays to the Nehru Stadium and the swimming complex. Both the projects are running far behind the schedule.

Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee has continuously sent out assurances on the delivery timeline of these projects. However, the same is not backed by action. Instead, there has been a shift in focus to infrastructure development in Delhi which actually is NOT focus area for Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee. The achievements of central and Delhi government are shown to cover for the delays in 2010 Commonwealth Games preparations.

On the issue of security, Fennell said: " I have viewed security matter and we are satisfied that all that could be asked is being done for the security and we have assured our members and through them their athletes that the best security arrangements possible will be put in place."

The Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi will be India's first major international sports event after the 1982 Asian Games.

New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982. The Games to be held between October 3 and 14 next year.
