Members of the Indian men’s rugby team are confident of performing well in this year’s Commonwealth Games to be held here.
Naseer Hussein, the captain of the Indian men’s rugby team, said the squad will take part in a couple of tournaments and practice matches around the globe before the event.
‘An Asian level tournament concluded in New Delhi last week and India performed well in that. The team’s performance has greatly improved. We still have six more months to boost our preparation. A tour has been planned to New Zealand and, we will be imparting some basic training. There are many plans to increase our tournament playing exposure,’ said Hussein.
Irfan Aziz, the chief rugby coach of Jammu and Kashmir, mentioned that international experts and coaches are training the Indian team.
‘The team has eminent international coaches who are training the players. The team has had a training camp in South Africa recently, and till October, the team will be travelling on many international tours. In New Delhi itself, a Test event will be conducted in June. So as far as rugby is concerned, we are fully geared up for the Commonwealth Games challenge,’ Aziz added.
The coaches and the players, however, feel that the sport is not getting the due recognition it deserves in the country. And thus with more government support and media exposure the sport can gain popularity in India as well, they noted.
According to the 2010 ranking by International Rugby Board, the Indian National Rugby Union Team is ranked 85th in the world out of 95 teams.
