Malaysian Lawn Bowlers Bag Gold, Bronze In Delhi

Malaysia's world-class lawn bowlers signalled a strong message to their rivals ahead of the Commonwealth Games, scooping two gold and a bronze medal in a test event here.

Current world's top singles player Safuan Said outplayed New Zealand's Ali Forsyth for the gold in the eight-nation Invitational Lawn Bowls Event, which concluded here today.

He bowled out Forsyth, ranked fourth in the world, 9-8, 10-4 in the men's singles contest.

Under the sweltering summer heat, former Melbourne Commonwealth gold medallist and currently placed fourth in the world, Siti Zalina Ahmad slogged for another gold for Malaysia in the final.

She outclassed Australia's Kelsey Cottrell 9-4, 10-1 for the victory in the women's single's category.

"Three medals are bonus for us. We came here to evaluate of our players performances and adapt to the environment, but our player proved their class today," Malaysian coach Mohd Aziz Maswadi told Bernama.

The tournament was held as a test event ahead of the Commonwealth Games scheduled from 3 to 14 October, where Malaysia are targeting at least four gold medals in lawn bowls.

Meanwhile, in the women's triples event, Malaysian trio --Emma Firyana Saroji, Nur Fidrah Noh and Azlina Arshad -- gave no room to hosts India to win the only bronze for the country.

In an easy tussle, the Malaysian women wrapped up the game 11-3, 11-0.
