Mayor denied entry at Commonwealth Archery site

On his way to the venue, Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain was told by the police on Thursday that he would not be allowed inside the Yamuna Sports Complex without proper accreditation. Sain was invited by the Archery Federation of India to give away medals at the ongoing international archery test event for the Commonwealth Games.

The incident took place minutes before Sain was slated to arrive at the venue — he got a call from Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) D K Gupta saying he would not be allowed inside the venue unless he had an accreditation for himself and a pass for his vehicle.

“I was already on my way when the call came,” Sain said. “It is humiliating — despite being invited as the chief guest, I have to undergo police verification. Also, the police decided to inform me just an hour before the event.”

Confirming that he made the call, DCP Gupta said, “Rules are clearly laid down by the organising committee and we cannot change it for anyone. Besides, it takes only five minutes for the accreditation process.”
