Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC), which is trying to come to grips of the catering issue, has received favourable bids for serving packed food at its 17 venues for its workforce and volunteers, among others.
The OC has received seven bids for packed food to be served at 17 venues, while it has received four bids for food stalls to be set up at the venues.
The bidders for packaged food include Gravis (which had bid earlier), Fast Trax, Crystal and Bikanerwala. Fast Trax and Vatika are two of the four bidderss for food stalls.
The OC had taken a decision to cancel the tender for hiring caterers for all venues after overshooting it’s budget. The committee had received bids from 11 firms at that time.
The catering department of the OC has been going through several ups and downs. There have been changes at the helm of affairs as well. On June 25, the executive board was informed that talks are going on with the Indian Railway’s subsidiary — IRCTC — to serve at all venues.
The OC had gone into detailed negotiations with the IRCTC to bring down the prices. Sources inform that on the same day, when IRCTC submitted their revised bids, the OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi rejected the idea and instead asked his staff to float a new tender. Instead of a buffet meal, it was decided that packed food will be served.
Senior OC officials have, meanwhile, questioned whether serving packed food would be hygienic. “There is no food storage facility at the stadiums. It does not seem like a good idea to stack up the food packets in a bare room,” said a senior official. Bids for serving food at lounges will be floated next week. A decision on the tenders will be finalised soon.
