Trained personnel for Disaster management

A squad of 150 specially trained personnel will be deployed by the National Disaster Management Authority to keep vigil at all Commonwealth Games venues during the mega event to preempt any disaster or emergency situations.

The personnel have been trained by NDMA, India's highest authority on disaster management, as part of its disaster mitigation plan at the venues. "A squad of 150 personnel will man the Commonwealth Games venues. We are training them to deal with any sort of emergency situation,'' said vice chairman of NDMA, General (retd) N C Vij. He said the NDMA has tied up with the police and the Army to put in place an efficient disaster management mechanism during the sporting extravaganza, the biggest to be held in India after the Asian Games in 1982.

Without elaborating on details of the disaster management plan, Vij said the Army will also be providing some sort of "back up'' under the mechanism. He said 220 doctors have also been trained by the NDMA as part of its preparation for the Games. The NDMA has been organising mock drills in the capital to check preparedness of various agencies to deal with any sort of possible emergency situations.
